The commune center is the locality Sanislău, which was first attested in writing in 1306. The main economic branch in Sanislău is agriculture, especially cultivation of large crops. The commune also has large forests, mainly locust tree forests, which are renowned among bee keepers, but are also important hunting grounds. The Vermeş swamp is a natural reservation near Sanislău which protects numerous species of rare plants and animals identified here (even relic species from the Ice Age). This swamp is Romania’s single nesting place of the common small snipe (Galinago gallinago).
